On September 15, 1963, a man in a white and turquoise Chevrolet placed a box under the steps of the Sixteenth Street Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama. At 10:22 am, a bomb exploded. Eleven year old Denise McNair, fourteen year old Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley, who were attending Sunday school in the church basement, died in the blast — their bodies tattered by the explosion. In response to this act of terrorism, the late singer, Nina Simone wrote the song "Mississippi Goddam!" This video is part of my body of work on the subjects of race and identity.
